This Newfoundland-based band has collected a trio of Canadian Folk Music Awards, been named Newfoundland & Labrador Art Council’s Artist of the Year and earned a Juno nomination for best Roots and Traditional album. Geraldine Hollett, Andrew Dale and Phil Churchill have released Departures, which proves to be a fitting title. The songs themselves often touch upon a sense of departure—whether it is in a poignant tribute to someone who has died, a vivid tale of murder, a song to a loved one left behind or a tune about leaving someone. The Once remains rooted in its essential musical elements. Hollett is an incandescent and captivating singer who has brought comparisons to such iconic Americana stylists as Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris. The trio’s gorgeous harmonies and spirited instrumentation supplied by Dale and Churchill utilize guitars, mandolins, banjos and bouzouki build a rich musical tapestry.

As a solo recording artist and a founding member of the Creaking Tree String Quartet and the Foggy Hogtown Boys, Andrew has earned five Canadian Folk Music Awards and five Juno nominations. Andrew has teamed up with Mike Mezzatesta and James McEleney to form the Andrew Collins Trio. Committed to the innovation of new acoustic music, this ensemble has joined forces to create a compelling body of work that blurs the lines between bluegrass, jazz, old-time, folk, celtic and classical music. Their debut release A Play On Words won the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award for instrumental album of the year.
