The Nick was the fourth volunteer-run folk club to be established in Calgary after the Calgary Folk Club, Rocky Mountain Folk Club and Saturday Night Special. The intention of our founders was to include a broader selection of performers and musical genres in the Nick line-up, hence the name Nickelodeon Music Club. The founders of the Nick were very grateful for the encouraging support of Tim Rogers and John Leeder of the Rocky Mountain Folk Club and Mansel Davies from the Calgary Folk Club.
The Nick was started through the efforts of the folks who became our house band, Plug Nickel. Bob de Wolff and Al Williams were originally accompanied by Barb Herbut and Don Gowan. Spouses and friends became our first volunteers. Artist and Nick treasurer, Wanda Rottenfusser painted the three nickel logo that we use to this day. Bob and Vic Close, now A.D. of Fish Creek Concerts, were our first artistic directors, followed by Linda Kitchin and Vic Bell. Bob and Al, along with our first sound tech Mike MacLeod (The Acoustic Guitar), provided the sound equipment we used for over twenty years. For a minimal honorarium, their outstanding generosity allowed us to present our concerts for all those years. For decades, for every club, all sound and lighting equipment was moved from Bob’s basement, into a van or truck, into the hall, and back again.
Plug Nickel performed an opening set at every club from 1980 to 1990. Subsequent members of Plug Nickel included Aliesje Carruthers, J.P. Huang, Michael Heiden, Judy Threet, Malcolm McKay, Mark Owen, Cathy Cush and Kevin Doyle. Former members now reside from Nova Scotia to the west coast.
The Nick has always featured an opening act, although in the Plug Nickel years, the “opener” actually performed a guest set in between the two headliner sets! A look through the Nick’s opener list, posted below, will indicate performers who have gone on to become headliners and Juno award winners.

After 40 years it’s to be expected that a number of Nick performers are no longer with us. The following are artists whose passing we have noted. Sadly, the list is likely incomplete.
